Aother cool, rainy summer day. It's worrying to think that this summer might be as wet as last. I want my droughty (and quite doughty) Virginia back!
The rain feels very primeval and slows me. I'm uploading recent pictures of the Grounds. :) Trying to decide what snapshots to put up and what to just keep local on my computer is challenging. One goal would be to show some of the plants of my yard in their various winter, spring, summer and fall incarnations as they grow - as reference for those who are curious about real-life looks of these things. It is hard to find solid B-class pictures of things to help decide on what the realistic effect in the yard will turn out to be.
I don't know what has transformed me, but I finally care about proper nouns - of plants and animals, that is. In the past year or so, I find myself burning to know the names of every specific bird or plant. The desire is new to me, but feel ancient. I feel like the hunter/gatherer functions at my brainstem are coming to life. zizia aptera, grey-blue gnatcatcher, dicentra h. exima, enkianthus, papaver, kalmia latifolia or angustifolia, muscari, carex, oh! the list goes on and on. I've never tried so hard to learn a language as i try, now, to know my little plants' names.
