About the Author
James H. Lemly spent his early years in Jackson Mississippi. He did undergraduate work at Millsaps College in Jackson, and at the University of Mississippi. After service in World War II, he studied Transportation Economics and Business Administration at Indiana University where he received his doctorate in 1952. The Gulf, Mobile and Ohio is the product of his dissertation studies and was published in 1953.
In the fall of 1952 he began teaching at the University of Georgia and later transferred to Georgia State College, (later Georgia State University) where he retired in 1980. After this time he taught at North Carolina State University until 1985. During his university teaching and research years he served in a six-month study of transportation in Pakistan. Beginning in 1966 he spent several years teaching at the University of Lagos, Nigeria. Later he was instrumental in a transportation study for the Government of Ghana.
Jim Lemly is retired and lives in Fairfax County, Virginia.
